Preconference Courses, Exams and Workshops

Preconference and Conference Registration

Advance your expertise and career potential by obtaining a NEHA credential or certification at the AEC. You may choose to take just a credential/certification course, just an exam, or both a course and an exam.

Note: Only qualified applicants will be able to sit for an exam. A separate application is required for each credential exam and the application deadline is 5/28/19.


Registered Environmental Health Specialist/ Registered Sanitarian (REHS/RS)

Review course: Sunday, July 7 – Tuesday, July 9 from 8:00am–5:00pm Sunday and Monday, and 8:00am-12:00pm on Tuesday
Exam: Wednesday, July 10 8:00am 

Individuals will need to submit the application and all required documents and fees by May 28th in order to be eligible to sit for the exam. This two and a half day refresher course is designed to enhance your preparation for the NEHA REHS/RS credential exam. Participants are expected to have a solid foundation of environmental health knowledge and training equal to the eligibility requirements to sit for the REHS/RS credential exam. This course alone is not enough to pass the REHS/RS credential exam. The class will cover exam content areas as described in the Candidate Information Brochure.

Cost: $499 Members, $599 Nonmembers. REHS/RS Study Guide is included in this review course.

Certified Professional – Food Safety (CP-FS)

Review course: Sunday and Monday, July 7 and 8, 8:00am – 5:00pm daily
Exam: Tuesday, July 9 8:00 am 

Individuals will need to submit the application and all required documents and fees by May 28th in order to be eligible to sit for the exam.This two-day refresher course is designed to enhance your preparation for the NEHA CP-FS credential exam. Participants are expected to have prior food safety knowledge and training equal to the eligibility requirements to sit for the CP-FS exam. The course will cover exam content areas as described in the Candidate Information Brochure. The instructor will be available during and after the course for questions.

Cost: $399 for members and $499 for nonmembers. Includes the CP-FS Study Package (CP-FS manual, and CP-FS Flash Cards).

Certified in Comprehensive Food Safety (CCFS)

Exam: Tuesday, July 9 8:00 am 

Individuals will need to submit the application and all required documents and fees by May 28th in order to be eligible to sit for the exam.There will not be a CCFS review course offered at the AEC.

Affiliate Leadership Workshop

Monday, July 8

This workshop is free – Pre-registration is required (Capped at 50 participants). 

NEHA Affiliate leaders are invited to collaborate, learn, and network at this half-day workshop. The goal of this annual workshop is to provide affiliates with tips and resources for running successful associations.


FDA National Retail Food Regulatory Program Standards Self-Assessment and Verification Audit Workshop

Sunday, July 7 – Tuesday, July 9 
8:00am–5:00pm Sunday and Monday, and 8:00am-1:00pm on Tuesday

This workshop fee is $95 – Pre-registration is required (Capped at 50 participants). 

The Standards Self-Assessment and Verification Audit Workshop (Course ID: SAVAW) is designed to provide participants with an overview of the Retail Program Standards criteria and an in-depth understanding of the self-assessment and verification audit processes, worksheets, and forms. Participants should be program managers or those directly responsible for conducting program self-assessments and preparing for verification audits. Participants should have a good understanding of the criteria contained in each of the nine Retail Program Standards.


Instructional Skills Training

Do you want to be a better instructor? Do you know the difference between evaluation and assessment? Do you know when it is better to use presentation, facilitation, or demonstration as an instructional method with adults? Join this interactive class where you will work with colleagues discussing, debating, and putting into practice the instructor skills needed to increase engagement with your content.


NEHA and Climate for Health Ambassador Training

NEHA is partnering with Climate for Health, a program of ecoAmerica, to offer this training as part of our partnership to build the capacity of environmental health professionals to make a difference in their local climate and health conversation.  The Climate for Health Ambassador Training will equip environmental health professionals with knowledge, hands on experience, and resources to speak and act confidently on climate change and solutions. Join us for this training and become a resource on climate and health!


Partners with a Common Purpose

This workshop is free – no pre-registration is required

PwCP envisions creating change through a shared vision, or common purpose, that is embraced and supported by both government regulators and industry alike when it comes to improving public health and consumer services. You can expect to hear a few examples of successful industry-regulatory collaboration to set the stage for the open discussions that follow.  Topics will include not only the benefits to collaboration but perhaps more importantly, the barriers to collaboration and how to overcome them.  Session attendees will be encouraged to speak openly and to examine individual and collective abilities to impact food safety.


Survival Skills for Environmental Health Leaders

This workshp is geared for Environmental Health professionals in the first five years of their career. This intensive, interactive program focuses on management and leadership skill building, successful strategies, and experiential learning.After the class, you'll have the opportunity to participate in a leadership peer learning networkto continue your professional development and network. Whether you are new to EH or a rising star, this one-day, interactive workshop, taught by seasoned EH professionals will give you a foundation for building your skills.
